Illegitimate Births.
The illegitimate births numbered 52 or 2.7 per cent, of the total
births. These occurred in the several wards as follows :—
Deptford Park 4 Hatcham 4
Evelyn 3 Pepys 3
St. Paul's 6 St. Catherine's 3
Vale 4 St. Peter's 3
Clifton 4 St. John's 9
Canterbury 3 Town Hall 6
As far as can be ascertained, the occupations of the mothers in these
cases were:-Domestic servants 13; Factory hands 11; Barmaids 3:
Shop assistants 5; Typists, etc., 2. The remaining births occurred outside
the Borough and the information as to occupation is not available.
Under the provisions of the Notification of Births Act, 1907,
intimations have been received from medical men, parents and others
with respect to 1,731 births. Omitting still-births, which numbered
40, this gives a percentage of births notified to those registered of 89.
Midwives notified 1,156; doctors 422; parents 143; other persons 10.
