SAMPLES TAKEN INFORMALLY.
Eighteen samples were taken informally during
the year, four of which were found to be adulterated,
as follows
Sample 117.—Full Cream Condensed Milk. Found
to contain 4 per cent. less than the proper
amount of butter fat.
Sample 280.—Lemonade. This contained at the
bottom of the bottle a comparatively large
quantity of flocculent matter. The microscope
showed this to consist of the ordinary
dust and fluffy material present on the floors
of most living and manufacturing rooms. It
was mainly vegetable fibres of flax, etc.,
with a little fungus and bacteria. It would
be difficult to state the amount, but it was
certainly not a desirable or healthy contamination,
though probably accidental.
