INFANT CONSULTATIONS.
The work of Infant Consultations has continued
on the same lines as heretofore, that is, the individual
instruction of the mother by the doctor or health
visitor.
A few observations by the Medical Officers will be
of interest: —
Dr. Addison writes : —
" In making a report on the year's work, certain impressions
at once come into my mind. The first is one of wonder
and respect at the endless industry, patience and self-denial
required of, and displayed by, any poor mother who attempts
to bring up a family decently. One sees the young mother
with her first baby, bears and sympathises with her exhaustion,
nervous and physical, in trying to keep the baby well, feed
it herself, wash it and also do her house cleaning and washing.
Then one sees the mother of six or seven, the baby clean and
vigorous, and the others not at school brought up by turns,
all well-cared for, and often well-behaved and obedient, and
realises that the woman who can do all that this mother does.
