ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CAMBERWELL TUBERCULOSIS
CARE COMMITTEE FOR 1959.
During the year changes took place in the membership
of the Committee. Miss S. Burkin, representing the
Banyard Nurses, Alderman Mrs. Jessie Burgess, J.P.,
representing the Divisional Health Committee, L.C.C.
Division 7, and Mr. P. Lippiatt, representing the National
Assistance Board (Camberwell South), resigned.
The vacancies were filled by the following members:
Miss S. Hughes, the Banyard Nurses.
Alderman W. Allen, O.B.E., Divisional Health
Committee, L.C.C. Division 7.
Mr. F. Willsher, Area Officer, National Assistance
Board, (Camberwell South).
The continued aims of the Committee are to help
patients to rehabilitate themselves after a long illness,
to relieve the stress of financial burdens with financial
assistance during treatment, to organise and maintain an
occupational therapy class, and to raise sufficient funds
by means of the Christmas Seal Sale to finance these aims.
Although the number of cases on the Tuberculosis
Register is diminishing the activities of the Committee
and the work of assistance continued on much the same
scale.
The secretary interviewed 1,312 cases. The majority
of these required communication with assisting Bodies,
both public and voluntary, including Almoners of hospitals
and public officials. Help and advice is given to
patients applying to the London County Council or Camberwell
Borough Council for assistance in re-housing. In
addition the Secretary receives many enquiries for advice
outside the scope of the Committee's work and it is
gratifying to know that we are able to guide the enquirer
into the right channels for help and advice.
The following is a list of the types of assistance
given and the number of patients assisted by the
Committee:-
