Pneumonia.
During the year 150 cases of pneumonia were notified. Of
these 117 were of the acute primary form and 33 of the acute
influenzal type. Ninety-nine of these patients received hospital
treatment.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
Twenty-two cases of this disease were notified in 1938, and of
these 14 were treated in hospital. There were also 17 cases of
inflammation of the eyes reported by the Medical Officer of Health
of the London County Council. All these patients were supervised
by the Health Visitors. The following table provides particulars
as to the result of the treatment in respect of the notified cases.

Puerperal Fever.
Fourteen cases of this disease were reported, four of the patients
being confined in hospital, one in a nursing home, and nine in their
own homes. The home confinement patients were subsequently
removed to hospital for treatment. There were no deaths from
among the notified cases.
So far as could be ascertained, none of these patients was a
contact, direct or indirect, of a person suffering from scarlet fever
or of a person who had recently suffered from a sore throat.
Puerperal Pyrexia.
In 1938 44 cases of puerperal pyrexia were notified. Forty
notifications were in respect of patients confined in hospitals and
four of patients confined in their own homes. All of those confined
at home were subsequently removed to hospital. One notified case
died, the stated cause of death being reported as broncho-pneumonia
and ulcerative pharyngitis.
