Infantile Mortality.
The deaths of infants under one year numbered 191, of which
116 were males and 75 females.
The infantile mortality rate was 61 per 1,000 births registered
during the year.
The number of deaths of illegitimate infants was 15 representing
a death rate of 115 per 1,000 illegitimate births.
The causes of the deaths of infants under one year of age appear
in the table on page 12.
It will be seen that the chief causes of death were prematurity
40, diarrhoea and enteritis 34, and broncho-pneumonia 28.
Neo-Natal Mortality.
Neo-natal deaths, i.e., the deaths of children under one month
old, numbered 88, equal to a rate of 28-3 per 1,000 live births
registered as compared with a rate of 19-6 in 1937.
