Ice Cream.
At the end of 1948 there were 320 premises registered for the
sale of ice cream in the Borough. Of these 33 were manufacturers
premises. Eighty-seven samples of ice cream were submitted
for examination by the methylene blue test, a test well
suited for the routine examination of large numbers of samples.
The results were as follows:—
Grade. No. of Samples.
I 14
II 24 38 satisfactory.
111 14
IV 35 49 unsatisfactory.
Where a sample was deemed to be unsatisfactory a visit was
made to the premises by the Inspector and advice was offered
as to the steps which should be taken to effect an improvement.
Letters were sent to the manufacturers and managers of shops
giving the results of the examination of samples in every case.
On the whole manufacturers and vendors of ice cream were
anxious to co-operate in any way with the authority in improving
the grade of ice cream.
