SCHOOLS—
The sanitary accommodation in each of the schools has been
inspected twice during the year, and found to be satisfactory.
SWIMMING BATHS AND POOLS.
The swimming baths under the control of the Bermondsey
Borough Council are four in number, two being at Central Baths,
and two at Rotherhithe Baths. The baths at Central Baths are,
1st class, 124,000 gallons capacity, and 2nd class, 85,000 gallons.
The Rotherhithe Baths have a capacity of 80,000 gallons each.
No filtration plant is used. The baths are frequently emptied,
the sides and bottoms thoroughly cleansed and the baths re-filled
with water from the supplies of the Metropolitan Water Board.
The Baths Committee and Council place no restrictions whatever
on the amount of water used and the frequency with which the
water is changed secures a high standard of cleanliness. The
water in all four baths is chlorinated by the addition of liquid
chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) to the extent of about .5 parts per
million, and this is maintained at all times.
There is also an Open-Air Swimming Pool in Southwark
Park, which is under the control of the London County Council
The Pool has a capacity of 360,000 gallons, and accommodation
for 500 persons. The average number of swimmers is 58,500
per annum. The water is aerated and chlorinated through a
chlorine gas filter, the whole passing through in eight hours.
