ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the Borough of
Bermondsey.
Sir, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my Annual Report for the year
1937. I desire, as in previous years, to express thanks to the
chairmen and members of committees, and to say that the harmonious
relations between the controlling committees and the
officers of the department have contributed greatly to the efficiency
of the department and the happiness and welfare of the staff. In
particular I wish to express my personal thanks to all the chairmen
who have been in office during the year. The effective working of
an active department depends in a very large measure on the
interest and advice contributed by the latter outside the committee-room,
and these have been accorded to the fullest extent
during the year.
This year has been one of unusual pressure upon the staff, and
bearing in mind the very low rates of incidence of the infectious
diseases, this fact is rather difficult to explain. I think there can
be very few Public Health Departments in the country with a
more efficient and hardworking staff than our own, and I am
grateful for the opportunity of expressing my appreciation of
their work in this manner to the Council.
