Sewing Class.—Mothers were taught at the sewing class to
knit and to make garments for themselves, their husbands, or their
children, and special instructions were given as to outfits for
expectant mothers. Some provided their own material and to
others material was supplied at cost price through the Centre. 51
Classes were held, and these were attended by 34 mothers; these
made in all 566 attendances. The attendances of children in the
nursery on these occasions numbered 664.
Clothing Club.—This club was held to sell woollen and other
garments at a reduced cost for the babies and children of those
mothers who attended the Centre.
Advice and treatment were given at the clinics held at the
Old Sessions House, Clerkenwell Green, for the following conditions :
Babies under 1 year of age:
Cough 132, constipation 90, general advice 347, general inspection
151, coryza 30, diarrhoea 33, marasmus 22, anaemia 3, digestive
disturbance 34, malnutrition 19, rupture 3, hydrocephalus 1,
phimosis 3, conjunctivitis 4, herpes 1, constipation and naevus 5,
venereal disease 4, cough and otorrhoea 2, constipation and rupture
2, diarrhoea and vomiting 3, rash 11, impetigo 2, pemphigus 2,
otorrhoea 3, intertrigo 1, broncho pneumonia 1.
The following recommendations to hospital or private doctor
were made:—
Marasmus 2, phimosis 2, naevus 2, rupture 1, otorrhoea 4,
digestive disturbance 1, venereal disease 1, broncho pneumonia 1.
Children aged 1 to 5 years:
General advice 235, general inspection 17, cough 94, marasmus
9, diarrhoea 21, injured arm 2, rash 3, constipation 26, enuresis 3,
digestive disturbance 11, anaemia 24, debility 17, eczema 12, coryza
17, adenitis 6, malnutrition 24, otorrhoea 15, worms 7, impetigo 5,
conjunctivitis 5, enlarged tonsils 5, pemphigus 3, whooping cough 2,
dental caries 3, pruritis 1, rickets 2, burn 4, urticaria 1, genu varus 2,
abscess 2, chicken pox 1, stomatitis 2, phimosis 2.
