Here it is seen that the death-rate from Measles has varied
considerably in the several Quinquennial periods, being as low as
C48 per 1,000 in the years 1876-80, and as high as 0.63 in the
1856-60 and 1896-99 periods.
In London the death-rate has varied even more considerably,
having been as low as 0.25 in 1852, and as high as 0.94 in 1864.

During the last four years the numbers have varied greatly, as may be seen by the following figures:—

1896288 deaths= 0.85 per 1,000 inhabitants.
189797 „=0.28 „ „
1898325 „=0.94 „ „
1899155 „=0.44 „ „

The disease was most fatal in Islington South-west, where it
was the cause of 59 deaths, equal to a death-rate of 0.54 per 1,000
of its inhabitants, particularly in the first and second quarters of
the year in that part lying along the Clerkenwell boundary from
Liverpool Road to Penton Street. It was also present fatally in
the fourth quarter in those streets to the east and west of
Bemerton Street, but particularly in those towards the west.
In the Highbury sub-district it was prevalent as well as fatal in
the second quarter, especially around Queensland Road, Queen's
Square, Brand Street, and other small streets in that neighbourhood.
In Upper Holloway, during the fourth quarter it was the cause
of 15 deaths, most of which occurred in those streets situated
within the rectangle formed by Hornsey Road on the west, Seven
Sisters Road on the south, Fonthill Road on the east, and Moray
Road and the Workhouse Schools on the north.
In Islington South-east the deaths numbered 18, 15 of which
occurred in the first half of the year. The known cases and the
deaths occurred in Pickering Street, Popham Street, Grosvenor
Street, and Hanover Street.
The death-rate (0.44) from Measles was slightly below the rate of
0.47 experienced in the Encircling Districts, in which 380 deaths
were registered.
