General Register Office,
Somerset House,
London, W.C. 2,
31st March, 1917.
Sir,
I am directed by the Registrar-General to inform
you that the following estimates of population have been
adopted in this office for the calculation of the death rate
and birth rate of your borough for the year 1916 : —
For the death rate 115,552
For the birth rate 125,723
The former is an estimate of the civilian population :
the latter of the total population based on the assumption
that the ratio between the total and the civilian population
is the same in the borough as in England and Wales
as a whole. With a view to approximation to the population
amongst which the births have occurred, the total
population of England and Wales for this purpose has
been calculated by adding to the published estimate for
1914 the natural increase up to the middle of the year
1916.
A statement showing a summary of the vital statistics
for England and Wales and for groups of towns during
1916 is enclosed herewith.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
T. H. C. Stevenson, M.D.,
Superintendent of Statistics.
The Medical Officer of Health of the
Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green.
