In most cases, either no payments or nominal payments only were received,
but in certain midwifery cases the home help was employed full-time in
connection with the confinement and lying-in, and substantial payments were
made by the women for the service. The funds were obtained voluntarily,
and the Ministry of Health has given 50 per cent. grants in respect of the
deficit on confinement cases only. It is most desirable that the grant should
be extended to the work of home helps in all cases where they give assistance
to ailing necessitous mothers for the benefit of the mothers and their young
children. Payment was made by the Borough Council in 1919 for the
service of the home helps in cases of influenza and pneumonia, but no grants
in respect of maternity work were made by the Council until after the end of
the year.
Home Nursing.—The work of the four local district nursing associations in
this connection (see page 81), includes the nursing of mothers and children.
The work done in cases of measles, whooping cough and ophthalmia neonatorum
by the nursing associations at the expense of the Mayoress of St. Pancras
Nursing Fund for Sick Poor Children is referred to on pages 77 and 79.
The Maternity Nursing Association undertakes "monthly nursing" as
well as supplying midwives.
