IV.—Unhealthy Areas.
(1) No areas were represented in recent years prior to 1919.
(2) On October 29th, 1919, the Medical Officer of Health reported to the
Housing Committee in regard to 15 areas in Somers Town comprising
455 houses, containing about 2,625 rooms occupied in about 1,109 lettings by
about 4,234 persons (2,767 adults and 1,467 children under 10). They were
reported as being insanitary areas which could not be satisfactorily dealt with
otherwise than by schemes of reconstruction. The particulars in regard to
these areas and the action taken by the Council will be found on pages 95-97.
(3) No complaints were received during the year that other areas were
unhealthy. Reference to Sidmouth Street and Litcham Street areas will be
found on page 97.
V.—By-laws relating to Houses let in Lodgings, etc.
The London County Council have not yet brought into operation the
by-laws which they are to make under the Housing Act of 1919. Reference is
made to them on pages 87 and 88. It appears scarcely possible under the existing
housing stringency to enforce any raised standard of air-space per occupant,
or accommodation in respect of water-closets and other offices separate (or
even, in many cases, convenient) for every dwelling in tenement houses.
