Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Births.
During the 52 weeks ending the 30th December, 1916, 6,246
births, 3,211 of males and 3,035 of females, were registered, compared
with 6,383 in 1915
The total number of births registered in this Borough was
6,044, but 238 births occurred in Institutions outside the Borough
of persons belonging to the Borough, and 36 births in Institutions
in the Borough of persons not belonging to the Borough, making a
corrected total of 6,246.
In Table II. is shown the number of births, males and females,
the birth-rate, and the rate of natural increase for each sub-district,
and for the whole Borough.

84 births occurred in the Workhouse, 48 of which belonged
to the Borough.
322 illegitimate births took place in the Borough, 22 of these
belonging to Clapham, 13 to Putney, 174 to Streatham, 56 to
Tooting, and 57 to Wandsworth. Of the 174 illegitimate births
that occurred in Streatham, 134 took place in a private home in
that sub-district, 31 illegitimate births were also registered outside
the Borough, making a total of 353.
The percentage of illegitimate births to total births was
5.6.
