From the table on page 75 it will be seen that the visits paid
to foster-mothers by the Council's Health Visitors total 402 giving
an average per foster-mother of 9 visits per year; these visits made
a relatively small demand upon the Health Visitors' time because,
except in special cases, they were carried out when the Health
Visitor had occasion also to visit other houses in the same neighbourhood.
Well over half the foster-mothers are in the habit of attending
the Infant Welfare Centres regularly with their charges which, in
itself, is a strong reason why this work should be entirely under the
control of the Local Authority.
The small number of deaths (2) which have occurred during
the year must be regarded as satisfactory; these deaths were due to
congenital weakness, and Marasmus, and an inquest was held in
regard to the first mentioned case.
The one infant compulsorily removed had been placed in the
care of a foster-mother who was suffering from tuberculosis and
whose housing accommodation was inadequate. A relative of the
infant was found who was prepared to look after it and thus the
difficulty was satisfactorily overcome.
