existing at Blackheath Hill, and another on the open space known
as " Batley Park " at the junction of Westcombe Hill and Charlton
Road. Owing to the fact that the latter site was scheduled as an
open space and included in the London Squares and Enclosures
(Preservation) Act, 1906, it became necessary for the Council to
ask the London County Council to insert a clause in their next
General Powers Bill with a view to obtaining Parliamentary
Powers to erect such convenience. With regard to the third
convenience, which it is proposed to erect in place of the existing
aboveground Urinal near the corner of King William Street and
Romney Road, the site has not yet been definitely decided upon.
Negotiations are still pending between H.M. Office of Works with
reference to a site at the entrance to Greenwich Park, or alternately,
which in my opinion is the better situation, a site adjacent to the
existing structure, which matter is under negotiation with the
Admiralty and Seamen's Hospital.
SECTION 8.
PUBLIC HEALTH STAFF.
There was very little change in the constitution of the Public
Health Staff during the past year. Dr. V. J. F. Lack who had been
responsible for the Maternity and Child Welfare work for just over
twelve months resigned in February and was succeeded by Dr. G. J.
Sophian.
I regret to report the death which occurred in June last, of
Mr. D. Gilbert who had been in charge of the dental work of the
Department since October, 1919.
As foreshadowed in my annual Report last year owing chiefly
to the continued state of Unemployment among the working classes,
it became necessary to close the Municipal Creche at East Greenwich
necessitating the dispersal of the staff.
