No seizures of unsound food were made during the year, but a
number of tradesmen voluntarily surrendered certain articles of
food as unwholesome or unfit for the food of man in addition to the
meat already referred to, particulars of which are set out on page 63.
Ice Cream Premises.—There were 82 premises known at the
commencement of the year where the manufacture of this commodity
was carried on ; 62 have been added during the year and 23
taken off, leaving a total of 121 premises. These premises were
inspected on 137 occasions, improvement required by way of
cleansing of the premises in 7 cases, and insanitary conditions
remedied in 3 instances.
Bakehouses.—Eighty-nine inspections have been made of the
various Bakehouses in the Borough, 41 nuisances found therein
have been abated, whilst in 1 instance the premises were closed
owing to defective condition.
At the end of the year there were 5 Factory and 37 other
Bakehouses on the Register, 13 of which are underground.
Food and Drugs Acts.—Four hundred and twenty-four
samples have been purchased under the provisions of the Sale of
Food and Drugs Acts and submitted to the Public Analyst for
analysis, of which 411 were certified to be genuine and 13 adulterated,
the adulterations thus being equivalent to 3.16 per cent.
of the samples taken.
Of the total number of samples purchased, 131 were milk, of
which 4 were certified to be adulterated ; the remaining adulterated
samples were 3 of vinegar, 2 of dripping, 2 of rice, 1 of zinc ointment,
and 1 of medicine.
Proceedings were taken in 4 cases, resulting in costs being
imposed in 1 instance. The remaining three cases were dismissed,
one on account of warranty proved, one owing to the withdrawal of
Part 5 of the Food Order, 1921, and the other the summons was
withdrawn.
A warning letter was sent in 9 cases.
