The Birth Rate for the County of London equals 21.0 per 1,000
of the population. The Birth Rate for all England and Wales was
20.6.
Illegitimate births numbered 63, representing 2.9 per cent. of
the total births.
Eighty-six illegitimate births were registered in the Borough.
In 37 cases, however, the mothers were ordinarily resident outside
the Borough, and these births were consequently allocated to the
correct areas. Fourteen illegitimate births belonging to Greenwich
occurred outside the Borough, thus giving the net figure of 63.
Thirty illegitimate births occurred in the Greenwich and
Deptford Hospital.
Under the provisions of the Notifications of Births Act, 1907.
intimations have been received from medical men, parents, and
others, with respect to 2,257 births.
DEATHS.
The total number of deaths registered during 1922 was 1,313,
of which 677 were males and 636 females. The crude Death Rate
for the Borough of 12.92 per 1,000 compares favourably with 13.4,
the Death Rate for the County of London, and 13 0, the Death Rate
for the 105 Large Towns.
The Death Rate in the various Metropolitan Boroughs varied
from 11.1 in Hampstead and Lewisham, 11.2 in Wandsworth,
11.6 in Woolwich, 12.0 in Fulham, up to 17.0 in Bermondsey, 16.3
in Finsbury and Shoreditch, 15.5 in Southwark, and 15.3 in Bethnal
Green.
Locally the Death Rate varied from 17.61 in St. Nicholas,
15.27 in West Greenwich, 12.38 in Kidbrooke, 11.68 in Charlton, to
11.26 in East Greenwich.
Of the total number of deaths 20 under five years of age were of
illegitimate birth, 15 of whom were under one year of age.
