were purchased by the Council and disposed of to the mothers
attending the Consultations, either at full or reduced rates.
During the year also about 1,515 lbs. of Virol and 112 lbs. of
Emulsion have been similarly distributed.
Dental Work. The arrangements made last year with the
British Dentists' Hospital that they should provide a qu lified
dental surgeon to attend on one half-day per fortnight to give dental
attention to any patient certified by the Maternity and Child
Welfare Medical Officer as requiring such, with a view to an improvement
in their physical condition, are still in operation. 110
patients have been attended by the dental surgeon and 15 dentures
have been provided, the total cost of the dentures being £52 7s. 6d.,
of which amount the Committee have decided that the patients
should pay £20 7s. 6d.
Puerperal Fever. Five cases of this disease were notified
during the year, four of which unfortunately proved fatal. There
did not appear to be any common source of infection amongst
these cases, as they occurred in different districts and at different
times all over the Borough.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum. Twenty-eight cases of this disease
were notified during the year, both eyes being affected in 18
cases, and one eye only in the remaining ten cases. Fortunately in
no case did any permanent injury to the eye remain.
Of the total number of,cases, 11 occurred in East Greenwich,
8 in West Greenwich, 8 in Charlton and 1 in St. Nicholas.
