Food Preparation. Places where food is prepared have been visited on 241 occasions, improvements being required in .32 instances, as detailed below: —

The 32 instances where matters needed attention included 29
cases where the premises generally, or kitchen and scullery particularly,
needed cleansing and lime-washing, 1 where the sanitary
arrangement was defective, 2 for want of ashpit.
Customs and Inland Revenue Acts.—One application with
respect to 5 tenements was received during the year for certificates
under these Acts, and a certificate was granted, for the alterations
required were carried out by the applicant.
Housing of the Working Classes. Premises have been found
to be overcrowded in 17 cases, which have all been abated. One
hundred and sixty-one houses have been generally repaired; 134
premises have been cleansed, lime-washed, and repaired; 25 have
been improved as regards their ventilation; 158 premises have had
the walls and ceilings cleansed throughout, and 231 premises have
been partially cleansed; leaky house roofs and gutters have been
repaired in 369 cases; 25 staircases have been improved and ventilated;
nuisances from dampness have been abated in 129 cases;
dampness of walls has been remedied in 216 cases; direct connection
between the internal sanitary fittings of houses and the drain
