6 houses have been pulled down and the sites are still vacant, viz.:—
13, 14, 15, 16, Kilburn Vale.
2 houses are now in course of demolition, viz.:—
7, 8, Kilburn Vale.
3 houses are under Closing Orders, but these are not yet operative:—
5, 6, 7, Abbey Lane.
10 houses in addition have been thoroughly overhauled, viz.:—
1 to 9, Providence Place and Providence Cottage.
But in spite of these proceedings, the area still remains a collection of very
old houses badly arranged and close and confined in their general condition.
The total number of occupied houses is 49 at the present time and the population
is 234, namely, 88 males, 99 females, and 47 children under ten years of age
and in spite of the demolitions that have taken place the number of people
residing on the area is well over 200 to the acre.
In my opinion the area is a suitable one for an improvement scheme and the
position is one where additional accommodation is needed. To clear the area
is very desirable from a sanitary point of view.
I am, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
(Sgd.) FRANK E. SCRASE,
Medical Officer of Health.
This Report was considered by the Committee, who instructed
me to prepare schemes for dealing with the Area and certain adjoining
land.
The following Report was presented to the Committee:—
30th June, 1919.
To the Chairman and Members
of the Housing Committee.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
re Kilburn Vale Area.
In accordance with your instructions I beg to further report on the Kilburn
Vale Area as a housing site.
My former report simply dealt with the Kilburn Vale Area as it is and the
conditions that now exist.
To consider the site as one for a Housing Scheme it would be much more
advantageous to take in the land lying to the east of Abbey Lane than restricting
oneself to the 1 acre 29 poles, which was dealt with in my report of May 8th
and is that portion lying to the west of Abbey Lane. This would include taking
in a piece of land ¾ of an acre in extent, upon which are situated six old houses
and five workshop dwellings. They are, I understand, short leaseholds, having
only a few years to run. If this were done a total area or 2¼ acres would be
available.
