On 8th May I submitted the following report to the Housing
Committee:—
8th May, 1919.
To the Chairman and Members
of the Housing Committee.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Kilburn Vale Area.
In accordance with instructions I beg to report upon the Kilburn Vale Area,
as follows:—
The name Kilburn Vale Area has been applied, usually, to that area lying
between West End Lane, Abbey Lane, London General Omnibus Co.'s Depot,
and Providence Place. Its approximate area is 51,460 square feet or 1 acre
and 29 poles.
When it first came under review in about 1900, it consisted of 66 small
cottages and houses namely:—
Abbey Lane, 1 to 13.
West End Lane, 6, 6a, 8a, 8, 10, 12, 14.
Kilburn Vale, 1 to 16, and Chapel Keeper's House.
King's Cottages, 1 to 6 .
Munden Cottages, 2, 3 and 4.
Edward Terrace, 1 to 6.
William Terrace, 1 to 6.
Providence Place, 1 to 9, and Providence Cottage.
In 1903 the area was represented to the Loudon County Council by Dr.
Littlejohn, the then Medical Officer of Health, under section 4 of Part I. of the
Housing Act, who thereupon resolved that the scheme was not of general
importance to the County, and recommended that it should be dealt with by the
Borough Council under Part 2 of the Housing Act of 1890.
The Borough Council did not take steps to bring about arbitration on this
point but on June 6, 1905, the Housing Committee of the Borough Couneil
referred the Area to the Public Health Committee to be dealt with under the
Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
Much work has taken place upon this area under the powers of the Public
Health Act, but more significant is the action that has been taken by the
Public Health Committee under the Housing and Town Planning, &c., Act, 1909,
by means of Closing Orders, &c.
Since that date;—
6 houses have been pulled down and rebuilt, viz.:—
2, 3, 4, Munden Cottages.
6 and 6a, West End Lane.
11, Abbey Lane.
