3. Erection of Maisonettes.
The Council have adopted a scheme for the erection of 62
maisonettes in Daubeney Road, Adley Street and Rock Road.
The actual details with regard to the construction of the cottages
and maisonettes have not yet been settled..
The great difficulty in dealing with much of the housing
property in the Borough arises out of the cost of carrying out
repairs, and also to the fact that, owing to the age of many of
the houses, frequent repairs are necessary. It has become
impossible in many instances for an owner to recompense himself
for expenditure on property by money received in rent, and the
property has become in consequence by no means an asset, but
a difficulty and an expense; in other words, the juice of the orange
has been squeezed and there is no profit left in the rind. Thus
appeals have been made to the Council to have Closing Orders
made, but this, of course, cannot be done except in grave circumstances,
during the present lack of alternative accommodation.
SANITARY INSPECTION.
PUBLIC HEALTH (LONDON) ACT, 1891.
(a) Complaints of nuisances.—During the year 1920 there were
4,662 complaints of nuisances made to the Public Health Department
and investigated by the Sanitary Inspectors of the Borough.
Defects or nuisances were discovered in 3,835 of the complaints.
Notices for the remedy or abatement of these were served upon the
owner or person responsible under the above Act.
(b) Infectious Disease.—The occupied dwellings inspected during
the year after infectious disease numbered 2,075. This is an
increase of 467 upon the number inspected during 1919. Any
nuisances or sanitary defects found were dealt with under the
provisions of the above Act.
