deaths registered as due to cirrhosis of the liver, a condition
regarded, as a rule, to be due to excessive indulgence in alcohol,
extending over lengthy periods.
TUBERCULOSIS.
During 1920, 549 primary notifications of tuberculosis were
received, details of which are given on page 40 of this Report.
Bacteriological examination of sputa from 290 cases was made by
the Council's Bacteriologist during the same period. In 52 of
these examinations the specific organism of the disease was
discovered, and in the remainder the result was negative.
The number of deaths from tuberculous disease in Hackney
during 1920, was 249, a decrease of 22 upon the deaths during
1919. These deaths are classified as follows:—

This number of deaths gives an annual mortality of 1.1 per
1,000 inhabitants.
