BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS.
1419 examinations were made for the medical professio??? of the sputum,
of swabs from the throat and of the blood of patients suspected to be suffering
from Phthisis, Diphtheria and Enteric Fever.
This number is an increase of 491 on that of the preceding year. It is
also 403 above the decennial average.
Diphtheria.—938 specimens were examined for Diphtheria, of which
261 were found to contain Diphtheria bacilli.
Enteric Fever.—23 specimens of blood were examined, of which only
three gave positive results.
Phthisis.—458 specimens of sputum were examined, only 83 of which
showed that the patients were suffering from this disease.
