Synopsis of the Inspectors' Work.—The following statement gives a brief synopsis of the district inspector's work in 1916 :—

Notices Served.—There were 1,777 intimation notices served by the
inspectors with respect to nuisances, of which 903 were delivered personally,
and 874 by post. In 237 instances it became necessary, as the intimations
had not been attended to, to report the nuisances to the Public Health Committee,
who ordered statutory notices to be served, of which 65 were delivered
personally and 172 by registered letter post.
Verminous Premises-Bedding and Clothing —72 premises were
found to be in a verminous condition, and these were cleansed by the owners
or occupiers upon receiving the Inspectors' intimations. In 24 instances it
was necessary to remove the bedding and clothing to the Disinfecting Station
for purification.
Smoke Nuisances.—Black smoke was observed to be issuing from the
chimneys of the undermentioned premises, and consequently notices were served
on the owners of the following businesses requiring the abatement of the
nuisance:—
Plaistowe's Ltd., Wharfedale Road.
King's Cross Laundry, York Road.
New River Laundry, Western's Ltd., Drayton Park.
Nuisances Discovered.—The following table shows the principal
nuisances discovered by the District Sanitary Inspectors, and clearly
demonstrates the important character of the work carried out under their supervision
