Sanitation.—Four hundred and thirty-eight sanitary defects were discovered,
of which 95 related to uncleanliness, 13 to insufficient ventilation,

accommodation was insufficient; in 70 cases they were foul, and in 67 they
were unsuitable or defective. In 12 instances separate accommodation for the
sexes had to be provided.
Altogether 429 sanitary defects had been remedied at the close of the year.
One hundred and eighty-four nuisances were discovered in the homes of

* Now included in District Inspector's summary.
Cleanliness.—The reports of the Inspectors show that 95 premises were
found in an uncleanly state, and that 94 were remedied. In the eight preceding
years the numbers have been as follows:—1907, 505; 1908, 425; 1909, 719;
1910, 970; 1911, 449; 1912, 476; 1913, 256; and 1914, 252. These figures
conclusively prove that greater cleanliness is now to be found in the workshops
and workplaces of the borough.
Effluvium Nuisances. -None were detected.
Ventilation.—Thirteen cases of insufficient ventilation were discovered, of
which 11 had been remedied before the end of the year.
Overcrowding.—In 11 instances overcrowding was disclosed, and 13
were remedied, which included some remaining over from 1914.
Want of Drainage of Floors.—4 cases, invariably in laundries,
were discovered where the floors were not so drained as to prevent the water
standing on them. Notices were duly served, and all were complied with before
the year had closed.
