THE NOTIFICATION, ISOLATION, FATALITY,
and
PREVENTION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
Under the Provisions of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
The Principal Diseases Comprise:—
Small Pox, Scarlet Fever, Diphtheria, Membranous Croup Enteric or
Typhoid Fever, Typhus Fever, Erysipelas, Continued Fever,
Relapsing Fever and Cholera.
There were 2,210 cases of these diseases which are notifiable under the
Public Health (London) Act, 1891, but in addition to them there are other
infectious diseases, such as Tuberculosis, Ophthalmia Neonatorum, Acute
Poliomyelitis, and Cerebro-Spinal Fever, which are notifiable either under
Orders of the Local Government Board or of the London County Council with
the approval of that Board.
The total cases notified are 737 below those of the previous year (2,947),
but are 170 above the average of the preceding ten years. The greatest
increases when contrasted with the decennial averages are to be found in the
returns from Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria, which was respectively 142 and
126 in excess, while Puerperal Fever also showed an increase of 3. Enteric
Fever and Erysipelas, however, showed decreases of 58 and 42 cases
respectively; and Small Pox of 1 case.
The 2,210 cases equalled an attack-rate of 6.98 per 1,000 of the civil
population.
In London the attack-rate was 6.82 per 1,000 or 0.16 less than in
Islington, while in the Encircling Boroughs it was 7.17, or 0.19 more than here.
