DIABETES MELLITUS.
36 deaths were registered, or a decrease of 2 on the return for the year
1914, and 6 above the average of the previous ten years.
19 deaths were among males, and 17 among females. Only one
death was known among persons under 15 years of age.
DEATHS FROM THE DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.
These diseases, which include Chronic and Acute Bronchitis, Pneumonia,
Pleurisy and Asthma, caused 1,141 deaths, or 245 more than in 1914. They
were equal to a death-rate of 3.61 per 1,000 of the civil population, and
represented 20.6 per cent. of the total deaths registered in the borough.
Acute Bronchitis.—There were 192 deaths as compared with 134 in the
previous year. 91 occurred among males, and 101 among females. No less
than 45 deaths of infants under 12 months were registered.
In the Public Institutions within the borough 29 deaths occurred.
Chronic Bronchitis. Three hundred and forty-five deaths were
ascribed to it, 163 being males and 182 females. This return is 42 above the
return for 1914.
Pneumonia (All forms). Five hundred and twenty-seven deaths were
registered, of which 293 were males and 234 females. They are 127 above
the number who succumbed in 1914. It was very fatal to infants under a
year old, among whom it caused 106 deaths, while between the ages of 1 and
5 years 164 died from it. Above 5 years of age the deaths numbered 257.
As many as 98 deaths occurred in Public Institutions, chiefly the Work
house Infirmaries.
Pleurisy From this disease 20 deaths were registered, of which 3 were
under five years old. 2 deaths occurred in Public Institutions.
Asthma and Emphysema—Thirty-one deaths were recorded from
these diseases, all of which were those of adults.
Other Diseases of the Respiratory System.—Twenty-six deaths
were registered from them, as contrasted with 21 in 1914.
