Illegitimate Births.
Illegitimate Births, 271—The number of illegitimate births shows
a decrease of 33 as contrasted with 1914, and is 20 below that registered in
1913; it is equal to a rate of 3.59 per cent. of the total births.

The number of illegitimate births in the borough since 1841 is shown in the following statement: —

* This is an estimated figure, as the returns for only seven years are available.
The Notification of Births.—6,483 Notifications were received, and
represent 86 per cent. of the total number of births registered. These are a
decrease of 638 on the return for 1914.

In the preceding years the figures were as follows:—

Births.Notifications.Failures to notify.Per cent. notified.Per cent. of Failures to notify.
1908 (From July 16th)3,9673,21175680.919.1

Here it is seen that whilst the failure to notify had gradually increased
during the previous four years from 9.7 per cent. in 1910 to 13.3 in 1913, in
1914 it dropped to 12.9 per cent., while last year it rose to 14 per cent.
The following statement shows by whom the notifications were made
since the Act came into operation:—
