Shops, etc., Inspection of.—The number of shops, etc., where
foodstuffs are sold varies somewhat from time to time, but may be approximated
for the year as follows:—

To these a total of 12,475 visits were made, apportioned as under, viz.:—

Offensive Trades.—The 3 tripe boilers, 2 gut scrapers and the
knacker's yard received 99 visits during the year. In one case an official
caution was sent to a tripe boiler because offensive smells were noticed in the
road outside the premises, while in another instance defects in the floor of the
tripe house were discovered and duly remedied.
Milkshops and Dairies. At the close of the year there were 573 milk
shops and dairies on the register, 9 having been added, and 21 removed,
from it.
They received 1,199 visits from the District Sanitary Inspectors, who served
43 notices for the execution of various sanitary improvements and the cleansing
of dirty utensils.
THE ADULTERATION OF FOODS AND DRUGS.
During the year 1,207 samples of various foods and drugs were obtained
by Inspector Burrell and submitted by him to the Public Analyst (Mr. Frank
L. Teed, D.Sc.) for examination. Of these 1,080 were genuine, while 127,
or 10.5 per cent., were adulterated. This is 0.7 per cent, higher than the
percentage of adulteration in the preceding year, but 0.3 per cent, below the
average rate during the last 24 years.
