The corresponding figures for 1908 were 4,611 and 2,154, and for 1907, 5,250 and 2,376.
The notices served as a result of these inspections numbered 3,088 (2,771 in 1908), viz.:
cleansing notices, 2,355; for verminous rooms, 145 : and for defects of all descriptions, 588.*
One hundred and forty-two (142) cases were referred to the Solicitor, but only 21 summonses
were issued.
An enumeration of the occupants of registered tenements was made in connection with
the annual cleansing. The enumeration covered 4,563 tenements, comprising 7,536 rooms,
occupied by 15,195 persons, averaging 3.3 persons to a tenement, and 2.0 to a room. The
distribution of occupants according to tenement was:—

The enumeration made in 1906, dealt with 4,372 tenements and 14,862 inhabitants,
and that made in 1908 with 4,902 tenements and 15,168 inhabitants. The appended statement
shows a considerable increase in the number of one-room tenements.
