Of the sex-age mortalities (Table 9) the most striking features are the universal, and
generally considerable, decreases in the rates at ages under one year, and the increases in
those at ages over 65 years, the increases being greater for females than for males.

In comparison with the Metropolis and circumjacent districts (Table 10), the Borough
rate (12.87) was higher than those of Hampstead (8.90) and Willesden (10.40) but below all
the others. The highest rate was that of Marylebone (14.56). In every case last year's rate
was below the quinquennial mean.
Comparisons of nett rates take no count of the variations ir. rates due solely to sex-age
composition of the populations. Such variations can be eliminated by the use of appropriate
"correction factors." The corrected rates thus obtained are given in Table 11, the upper
half of which is based on the Department's records, and the lower, on figures obtained from
