the Borough were recorded. The deaths of non-residents in the Borough were 37, and those
of residents beyond the Borough, 16 in excess of the decennial averages. (See Table I.,
Appendix.) The nett total of deaths of residents during the year was 1,964, 92 below the
decennial average (2,056), but 18 above the quinquennial (1,946). Last year's nett mortality
rate was 12.96 per 1,000 persons, as compared with 12.36 in 1908, and means of 14.01 and
13.04 for the preceding decennium and quinquennium respectively. The nett rates for the
first and second quarters of the year were in excess of the quinquennial means, those for the
third and fourth below.

The reduction in the rate for the third quarter was very considerable, equal to a drop of
23'3 per cent, of the mean, and due to the absence of any epidemic of infantile (summer)
diarrhoea. In Table II, Appendix, are given the annual numbers of deaths (nett totals) in the
Borough and each Ward since 1901, and in Tables III. and IV., the numbers of deaths during
the past year from the more important causes of death.
The 1,964 deaths comprised 923 of males and 1,041 of females, the corresponding
mortality rates being 14.22 and 12.03 per 1,000 individuals of each sex. The rate for males
was 0.49 below the quinquennial mean and that for females, 0.25 above. (See Table 8).
The rates (persons) for last year were above the means in four Wards, below in the others.
(Table 8). The greatest increase (8.2 per cent.) was in the rate for Lancaster Gate West,
Ward (rate, 1909, 8.66 ; mean, 8.00), and the greatest decrease (9.8 per cent.) in that of
Queen's Park (rate, 1909, 12.30; mean, 13.63). In Maida Vale and Church Wards only
were the rates for males above the means, while of those for females, all were above the
means, except in Queen's Park, Harrow Road and Church Wards.
