The Infantile Mortality Rate for the Borough, measured by
the number of deaths under one year to 1,000 births registered,
was 103, an increase of 19 compared with last year; the figure for
London as a whole was 105, and the Borough average during the
last five years, 1908-12 inclusive, 108.
The Zymotic Death Rate of 1.44 is 0 23 per 1,000 above the
corresponding figure for last year.
This increase in the Zymotic Death Rate is practicallv all
accounted for by the larger number of deaths from Diarrhoea and
Measles in Greenwich during the year.

I mentioned in the annual report for last year that the contract
had been signed for the purchase of certain premises to be
utilised for a Tuberculosis Dispensary, but here again the old adage
that " there's many a slip 'tvvixt cup and lip " was exemplified,
for at the last moment the Local Government Board withdrew
the tentative approval which had already been given
for this purchase, chiefly on account of the cost which would
be occasioned, i.e., a sum of £500 or £600 to put them into
such a state of repair as would meet our requirements, and, accordingly,
the purchase of this otherwise eminently suitable property
was not proceeded with, whereupon steps were immediately taken
