been improved as regards their ventilation; 164 premises have had
the walls and ceilings cleansed throughout, and 255 premises have
been partially cleansed; leaky house roofs and gutters have been
repaired in 319 cases; 86 staircases have been improved and ventilated;
nuisances from dampness have been abated in 146 cases;
dampness of walls-have been remedied in 126 cases; direct connection
between the internal sanitary fittings of houses and the drain
have been disconnected, trapped and amended in 267 cases;
similarly 35 stack pipes have been disconnected, trapped and
amended; 3 houses have been abolished as unfit for habitation;
and other nuisances, principally of dilapidations and want of
underfloor ventilation, have also been attended to in 40 cases.
During the year 397 houses in this district have been inspected
under the Housing and Town Planning Act, 1909, the records
of such properties being duly filed. Of this number, nuisances
or defects were found in 350 cases, concerning which houses
the necessary notices under the Public Health (London) Act,
1891, were served. Of these 350 houses thus dealt with,
in 7 cases the landlord voluntarily elected to close the property
instead of complying with the notices, and 4 of these were
demolished. In 270 cases the notices were satisfactorily complied
with, leaving 73 cases still in hand or otherwise undisposed of at
the end of the year; 17 houses closed in previous years were demolished
voluntarily during 1913.
