discontinued the supply by the Metropolitan Water Board, and
rely upon their own supply. A sample of this water has been
analysed, the results showing it to be of a satisfactory character.
During the year 147 water supply certificates have been
granted under Section 48 of the Public Health (London) Act,
1891 ; these certificates stating that the new houses to which
they refer are supplied with a proper water supply in accordance
with the Act. Defective water fittings have been renewed in
116 cases; 28 water supplies have been reinstated where the
supply had been cut off; 18 water supplies have been altered so
as to draw direct from the main ; the cleansing, repairing, and
covering of cisterns has been required in 21 cases.
Proceedings were commenced by the issue of a summons
for having an occupied house without proper and sufficient water
supply, under Section 48 of the Public Health (London) Act,
1891, in one case during the year; the summons however, was
withdrawn on payment of the costs, as the water had been put
on to the premises in the interval.
Smoke Nuisances. Two hundred and fifty-five observations
have been taken for smoke nuisances during the year, but
on only seven occasions was it found necessary to issue Statutory
Notices for the abatement of any nuisance which was found.
Three prosecutions have been taken during the year on this
account, all being against the same defendants, who were also
convicted of a similar offence in the previous year. Fines
amounting to £8 and costs £4 6s., were inflicted in these three
cases.
