Amongst the total number of births registered in the Borough
there were 79 in which the name of the father was not registered
and therefore not given in the return ; accordingly these births
may be presumed to be of an illegitimate character. 59 of such
births were registered in the East Greenwich district, which
includes the Infirmary of the Greenwich Union.
In 26 cases the mother was ordinarily a resident in the
Borough of Deptford, and accordingly this number of births have
been transferred to that Borough.
The remaining 53 were similarly allocated to the districts in
this Borough to which the mother ordinarily resided, making 26
of such births belonging to East Greenwich, 15 t® West Greenwich,
6 to St. Nicholas, and 6 to Charlton.
The birth rate for the County of London equals 24.2 per
1,000 of the population, and was the lowest rate recorded. It
varied from 13.6 in the City of London, 14.4 in Hampstead, 16.2
in the City of Westminster, 18.2 in Holborn, 18.4 in Kensington,
18.5 in Chelsea, and 18.9 in Stoke Newington, up to 29.6 in
Finsbury, 30.3 in Poplar, 30.5 in Stepney, 31.6 in Bethnal Green,
31.7 in Shoreditch, and 32 .3 in Bermondsey.
The Notification of Births Act, 1907, was formally adopted
by this Council on the 17 th March, 1909, coming into force
within the District of the Borough on 14th May, 1909, since
which time Intimations have been received from Medical Men,
Parents, and others, with respect to the birth of children in 1262
cases, which number compared with 1581 notified by the
Registrars of the several districts, and considering the additional
