W. A. Williams,
Town Clerk and Solicitor.
Sir,
I am directed by the Hackney Borough Council to acknowledge
the receipt of your letter of the 30th June last forwarding
copy of a letter addressed to the Board by Mr. G. H. Riches of
the White Hart Hotel, Hackney Marshes, complaining of a
nuisance arising from the river alongside his premises.
In reply, I beg to inform you that the complaint has been
investigated by the Medical Officer of Health to the Borough, and
he reports that the Lead Mill Stream which is complained of,
receives the combined effluents from the Walthamstow Sewage
Farm and the Leyton Sewage Works, and in consequence of the
diminished flow of the stream and the recent high atmospheric
temperature, rapid decomposition of the sewage effluents takes
place, giving rise to foul effluvia.
A sample of water has been taken from the Lead Mill Stream
near the White Hart Hotel and submitted to the Borough Public
Analyst for analysis. A copy of his report is enclosed.
