some foul smelling linen. No evidence was forthcoming that the
linen was specifically infected. Enquiries as to the usual causes
of infection yielded negative results.
The beginning of her illness was stated to be on March 10th.
A medical practitioner was called in on March 13th and on March
22nd she was notified to be suffering from enteric fever and was
removed the same day to hospital. Disinfection of the infected
room, clothing and bedding was forthwith carried out. It will be
observed that this undoubted case of enteric fever was twelve days
at home, a centre of infection amongst her family. She was nursed
during this time by her eldest daughter (age 19 years) who also
kept house for the remainder of the family, and after the removal
of her mother to hospital had charge of the domestic concerns of
the family.
R. H., age 5 years, was the next case to occur. She was a
daughter of the above. She is said to have been feeling poorly
when her mother was removed to hospital. A medical practitioner
was not called in to see her until April 6th. On the 10th of the
same month the case was notified as enteric fever and was
removed to hospital the same day. Disinfection was again carried
out.
The next case to fall ill was W. H. H., aged 3 years,
brother of the last, on May 4th. On the 8th of May the medical
attendant was called in, who diagnosed the illness as enteric fever.
The patient was forthwith removed to hospital. Disinfection was
again carried out.
The next case in the family was I. A. H., aged 7 years. another
daughter. She fiist fell ill on April 14th, a medical attendant being
called in on April 18th who diagnosed the case as enteric fever on
April 22nd. The case was removed to hospital on the same date.
This case, it will be observed, remained at home 12 days after the
onset of illness. Disinfection was carried out the third time.
The next and last case in the family was L. G. H., aged
18 months, the baby of the family and sister to the last case.
