Infant Mortality.—The deaths under 1 year amongst Hackney
residents during the year 1911 numbered 633. This is an increase
of 90 upon the number of infant deaths during the previous year.
The infant mortality-rate for the year 1911 is therefore 120 per
1,000 births. This figure shows a large increase over the Infant
mortality-rate for the year 1910, and is unquestionably traceable
to the excessive mortality from diarrhoea and enteritis due to the
excessive heat and dryness of last summer.
Other causes of deaths which must be mentioned are 76 premature
births, 81 attributed to the indefinite causes, atrophy,
debility and marasmus, and 105 to bronchitis and pneumonia.
