children were attending school in a verminous condition.

I had all these inspected, with the following result:—

No. of Homes Inspected.No. of Homes where Rooms alone were found Verminous.No. of Homes where Bedding or Clothes and Rooms were found Verminous.No. of Homes not Verminous.
4509352295

Amongst the 145 verminous homes there were 52 where bedding
and clothes were found to be infected as well as the walls of the
rooms. The bedding and clothing were taken in these instances to
the disinfecting station and steamed. The verminous rooms were
fumigated and, where necessary, notices were served upon the
owners to cleanse and strip the rooms to free them from vermin.
REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
The total quantity of house refuse removed from occupied houses
in the Borough to the Destructor by the Council's contractors during
the year 1911, amounted to 39,024 tons 3 cwts. 3 qrs. and 21 lbs.
From the North Division 18,043 tons 1 cwt. 2 qrs. and 7 lbs., and
from the South Division 20,981 tons 1 cwt. 3 qrs. and 14 lbs.
were removed at the rate of 4s. 5d. per ton, and a total cost of
£8,561 14s. 11d.
The quantity of house refuse removed during 1911 shows a
decrease upon that removed during 1910 to the extent of 457 tons.
This no doubt was due to the summer weather experienced last
year. The above total cost for the removal of house refuse is therefore
£157 1s. 11d. less than that for the year 1910.
The cost of disposal of the house refuse removed to the
destructor during 1911, which includes the destruction of the refuse by
fire and the disposal of the clinker arising from the refuse, together
with tins and other non-combustible material, has been estimated
by the Borough Electrical Engineer at the rate of 36.25d. per
ton, the total cost of destruction being £6,010 17s. 3d. This total
is £139 15s. 3d. more than that for the year 1910. The total cost
both for removal and destruction of the house refuse of the Borough
during 1911 is, therefore, £14,572 12s. 2d., being £17 6s. 8d. less
than the total expenditure during 1910.
Distributing the above total cost over the estimated population
of the Borough, it amounts to nearly 1s. 3¾d. per head.
