with the efficiency of the work incumbent upon the Borough
Council in connection with the treatment and prevention of consumption
in their district.
Cancer.
The number of deaths from Cancer registered of persons
belonging to Battersea during 1912 was 179 (males 76, females
103), as compared with 163 in 1911, and 141 in 1910.
The average number of deaths from Cancer during the ten
years 1902-1911 was 159. The death-rate from the disease was
during 1912 1.06, the number of deaths during the year being 20
in excess of the average for the decennium.
Alcoholism.
During 1912 in the Borough of Battersea, 5 deaths were
registered from acute and chronic alcoholism (males 2, females 3).
In addition to these 16 deaths were registered from cirrhosis of
the liver (males 6, females 10) a disease mainly due to alcohol.
The total number of deaths therefore to be ascribed to alcohol
was 21 as compared with 26 in 1911 and 22 in 1910.

Bacteriological Examinations. During the year 1912, 1161 bacteriological examinations of specimens sent in by medical practitioners practising in the Borough of Battersea have been made at the Clinical Research Association Laboratories at a cost of £172 3s. 9d., particulars of which are set out in the following table:—
