Report on the health of the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea for the year 1912

Acute Polio-Myelitis or Acute Polio-Encephalitis.
During 1912, two cases of acute polio-myelitis were notified
in Battersea.
Measles.
During 1912, 55 deaths were registered from measles within
the Borough of Battersea, as compared with 111 deaths from the
disease in 1911 and 74 deaths in 1910.
The death-rate was 0.32 per 1,000 population, as compared
with 0.45, the mean death-rate for the preceding ten years. The
death-rate in East Battersea was 0.54, and in North-West Batter
sea 0.35. In South-West Battersea no death was recorded during
the year from measles.
In London the death-rate from measles was 0.4 per 1,000
population, 1,799 deaths from this cause being registered during
1912.

The number of deaths registered from measles in each of the registration sub-districts during the past three years is as follows:-

Eleven deaths were of infants under one year and 37 of
children aged one to five years. Seven deaths occurred among
children over five years old.

The deaths in each of the four quarters of the year were as follows:-

The mortality from measles was low compared with previous
years during 1912. There was, as will be noted from
the statistics, a sudden and explosive outbreak towards the end of
the year, four-fifth of the deaths occurring in the last quarter of
the year. This high mortality was still maintained in the early
part of 1913. The usual precautions were taken to limit the high
mortality from the disease, but in the absence of a satisfactory
