Hackney 1909

Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1909

increasing density of the Borough and the fact, which I mentioned
in my last year's report of its growing industrial character,
are considered. That Hackney is becoming largely industrial
may be appreciated from the fact that at the end of 1909 there
were 438 factories, 1,311 workshops, and 3,263 outworkers in
the Borough. In face of these facts it must be a matter for congratulation
that, in spite of increasing density and the gradual
change to industrial conditions, the annual mortality from all
causes, and the infant mortality have progressively declined
This may be seen from the following table: —

In reference to the subject of infant mortality, I have, in the
absence of a health visitor appointed by the Council, made free
use of voluntary health visitors during the year, for the purpose
of giving advice to parents needing it in the care and feeding of
infants. The number of such visits made during the year in the
poorer districts of the Borough was 577, of which 357 were
primary visits and 220 subsequent visits. I have elsewhere
