MEDICAL OFFICER'S REPORT
FOR THE YEAR 1909.
PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT,
Town Hall, Hackney, N.E.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors,
of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney.
GENTLEMEN,—I beg to present herewith my Eighteenth
Annual Report on the Public Health of the Borough of Hackney.
The favourable condition of Hackney during the year 1908,
viewed from a health standpoint, has not only been maintained
but has also further improved during the year 1909. This latter
year was characterised by the low general death rate of 13.7 per
1,000 persons living. This is lower even than that of the previous
year, which was the lowest rate recorded for many years. The
infant mortality rate was 108 per 1,000 births. This is 9 per 1,000
births lower than that of 1908. On this point it must be admitted
that the cool and wet summer of 1909 was very favourable to
a low infantile death-rate. Infectious disease was also very low
during last year, the zymotic death-rate being .93 per 1,000 of
