Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1909

During the year information was received from the head
masters of the elementary schools in the Borough of 285 cases
of whooping cough either amongst their scholars or at the homes
of their scholars. In each of these cases a leaflet on the
prevention of the spread of whooping cough was sent to the
parent.
CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.
Tuberculosis.—During the year 1909 there were 58 cases of
pulmonary phthisis voluntarily notified by medical practitioners
practising in Hackney. This is a decline of 44 upon the number
voluntarily notified during 1908. There were in addition, however,
354 cases notified under the Public Health (Tuberculosis)
Regulations, 1908, which came into operation on the 1st January,
1909 (see page 64 for further report on these notifications).
Bacteriological examination of sputa from 104 cases was made
during the same period. In 28 of these the specific bacillus of the
disease was discovered, in 73 cases the result of examination was
negative, and in 3 cases doubtful. The number of deaths from
tuberculous disease occurring in Hackney during 1909 was 395,
which are classified as follows:—
