Measles.—This disease was responsible for 54 deaths in Hackney
during the year. This is a decline of 17 upon the number
occurring during 1908. The mortality rate for this disease for
1909 is .22 per 1,000, and that for all London for the same period
.48 per 1000, living.

The following table gives the distribution of the deaths from this disease in the different sub-districts of the Borough:—

During the same period information was received from the
head masters of elementary schools of 911 cases of measles
occurring amongst their scholars or at the houses of their scholars.
In each of these cases a leaflet on the prevention of the spread
of measles was despatched to the parent.
Whooping Cough.—There were 51 deaths from this cause in
the Borough during 1909. This shows an increase of 9 deaths
upon the number occurring during 1908. The mortality rate for
1909 from whooping cough is, therefore, .21 per 1,000 persons
living. The death rate for all London for the same period is
.26 per 1,000 living.
