REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
The refuse removed during the year 1909 from houses in the
Borough to the Destructor, Millfields Road, by the appointed
Contractors amounted to 39,216 tons, 17 cwts., and 2 qrs. From
the North Division 17;762 tons, 2 qrs., 21 lbs., and from the South
Division 21,454 tons, 16 cwts, 3 qrs,, and 7 lbs were removed at the
rate of 4s. 6d. per ton for the months of January, February and
March, and 4s. 5d. per ton for the remaining months of 1909.
The total amount of house refuse removed during the whole
year from the whole Borough shows an increase of nearly 648 tons
and a total increase in cost of £209 17s. 3d. This increase in cost
is only partly due to increased tonnage, the chief cause being due
to increased prices charged by the Contractors.
The cost of disposal of the house refuse removed to the
destructor during 1909, which includes the destruction of the refuse
by fire and the disposal of clinker arising from the refuse, together
with tins and other non-combustible material, has been estimated
by the Borough Engineer at the rate of 36.12 pence per ton for the
1st quarter of the year, and 36 43 pence per ton for the remaining
